Paint Decontamination: The Step Most Detailers Skip

Most amateur details go straight from a wash to a polish, and it's the reason their paint never quite pops the way a professional finish does. The middle step — chemical decontamination — is what separates clean paint from truly bare paint.
Why it matters. Even after a proper two-bucket wash, bonded contaminants remain: iron particles from brake dust, road tar, tree sap, and industrial fallout. Polish over them and you're just smearing grit across your clear coat, creating micro-marring that no wax can hide.
The two-step process. Start with an iron remover — a color-changing pH-neutral spray that dissolves ferrous particles into a bleeding purple runoff. Let it dwell 3-5 minutes, agitate lightly, and rinse. Follow with a dedicated tar remover on any residual black spots around the lower panels and wheel arches. Finally, clay bar or use a clay mitt with plenty of lubrication to lift what's left mechanically.
Test it yourself. Run your fingertips (in a plastic sandwich bag) across the paint before and after. The difference in glide is dramatic — and that's the surface you actually want to polish, coat, or wax. Skip this step and even the most expensive ceramic coating will bond over contamination and fail early.
How often. Twice a year for a garaged daily driver, quarterly for anything parked outside or driven in salt-belt winters. It's the single highest-leverage step in the entire detailing workflow.
